Caption: Photograph of a petri dish culture showing colonies of the bacteria Proteus vulgaris, growing on agar. This bacterium is commonly found in the human intestines, where under normal circumstances it is harmless. It may, however, become pathogenic, causing intestinal irritation & urinary tract infections. It is seldom the primary cause of infection, but usually acts in association with other more pathogenic bacteria. The individual bacterium is rod shaped and highly motile.
