Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the bacteria Salmonella sp, a group of bacteria responsible for Salmonellosis, a common form of food poisoning among humans. These rodshaped, motile bacteria are found in all animals including humans, normally coexisting without causing disease symptoms. However, when large numbers are ingested through the medium of contaminated food, particularly meat, milk & eggs, they produce a gastrointestinal infection, usually controllable, rarely fatal. The symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea & abdominal pain. Mag: X 10,000 (5x4ins).
