Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (SEM) of Haemophilus influenzae: individual bacterium are small, rod-shaped, gram-negative & may become encapsulated (capsule presence is associated with increased virulence). Haemophilus influenzae is occasionally pathogenic, causing secondary infections (eg after influenza) or a number of primary infections, including: pulmonary disease (lung), infantile meningitis, rhinopharyngeal (nose and throat) infections, otitis (ear infections) & endocarditis. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: X 15, 000 at 35mm size, x30,000 at 6x7cm size.
