Caption: Promethei Planum, Mars, satellite image. North is at left. This is a perspective stereo-colour image of a lava flow (left), ice (white) and part of the southern polar ice sheet (smooth area), in the Martian southern polar region of Promethei Planum. This area is around 100 kilometres across. The thickness of the ice on the edges of the polar ice cap is around 1 kilometre, but the ice cap proper is over 3.5 kilometres thick. The image data is from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express Orbiter.
