Caption: Promethei Planum, Mars, satellite image. North is at right. This is an overhead stereo-colour image of part of the Martian southern polar region of Promethei Planum. At far right is a large impact crater, around 100 kilometres across, and partially filled with ice (white). Across centre is a lava flow. At far right is part of the southern polar ice cap (smooth area), with ice up to 3.5 kilometres thick. The image data is from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express Orbiter.
