Caption: San Francisco Bay, satellite radar image. North is at top. San Francisco is the white area at upper left, on the tip of the peninsula. The Golden Gate Bridge runs northwards from San Francisco, across the mouth of San Francisco Bay (green area at centre left). On the landward north side of the Bay is the city of Oakland (white). The Bay Bridge connects the two cities. The surrounding countryside and mountains are brown in this image. This composite of three images was obtained in 2002, 2003 and 2004 by the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) instrument on the European Space Agency's (ESA) Envisat (Environmental Satellite).
