Caption: False colour transmission electron micrograph of Proteus sp, a rodshaped flagellate bacterium (gram negative). The bacterium is commonly found in soil, water & the intestines of animals, including humans. Under certain conditions some species will cause intestinal irritation. They are rarely responsible for primary infections, but are found in association with more pathogenic bacteria in conditions such as cystitis, peritonitis & some forms of diarrhoea. They move by means of flagella (not visible here), long hairlike extensions which propel them through the environment. Mag: X11,750 (at 35mm size).
