Caption: SS Turbinia. The SS Turbinia, launched in 1894, was the first ship to be powered by steam turbines and achieved a world record speed of 34 knots (around 60kph). It was created by Sir Charles Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine, to demonstrate the potential of steam turbine propulsion. Photographed at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
