Caption: HEADACHE, ARTWORK Migraine. Illustration of a migraine theory explaining its onset as being triggered by a malfunction in the synchronization of sensory input which causes pain through stimulation of the trigemial nerve and inflammation from leakage in the blood vessels of the dura mater. The triptan family of drugs seems to affect migraines on three different levels. First, they may trigger the vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the dura mater, reducing leakage. They may also inhibit activity in the nerves surrounding the trigemial nerve, thus reducing the pain signal. And last, they also seem to inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, reducing stimulation of the trigemial nerve.
