Caption: CATHODE RAY TUBE, DRAWING Cathode ray tube, highlighting electrons. The cathode tube makes it possible to demonstrate the existence of electrons. A tube is filled with low-pressure gas. A cell in the tube is connected to a cathode, creating a cathode ray which is directed between two positively-charged metal plates. The ray is deflected. Conclusion, the ray is negatively charged. Thomson deduced from this that the ray was made up of negatively-charged particles, known as electrons.
