Caption: False colour transmission electron micrograph of a single bacterium of the genus salmonella, showing numerous flagellae - the bacterium's propulsion unit. All members of the salmonella genus are intestinal parasites including S. typhi & S. paratyphi, responsible for typhoid and paratyphoid fevers in humans. Other species and serotypes are responsible for gastro-enteritis or food poisoning. Different types are classified according to their antigenic nature; some 1800 serotypes have been distinguished. S. typhi (the typhoid bacillus) is wholly parasitic, with man its only natural host. Epidemics spread via water/food supplies from a human source.
