Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Campylobacter jejuni. The Campylobacter family comprises curved or spiral Gram-negative bacilli with flagellae at one or both poles of the bacterial cell, giving them a darting motility. They are found in a wide variety of animal hosts, especially birds in which they form part of the normal intestinal flora. Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans, causing fever & acute abdominal pain followed by watery & often bloody diarrhoea. Recovery usually occurs spontaneously in a few days. Magnification: x5130 at 35mm size. Yellow tint. Original is B220/238.
