Caption: Heart bypass surgery. Close-up of the heart during a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operation. The device seen (white) is stopping the heart beating in the area to be operated on, while the rest of the heart beats as normal. This is less traumatic to the patient than stopping and restarting the heart. During CABG, a healthy artery is attached to the diseased coronary artery. This re-routes the blood flow, bypassing the blocked coronary artery. This is usually to treat atherosclerosis, a build-up of fatty deposits that can lead to heart pain (angina) or a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
