Caption: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a species of bacteria which causes the skin disease erysipeloid. The bacteria are non-motile, rod-shaped and Gram-positive and have a tendency to clump together. Persons working in the fish, poultry or meat processing industries are vulnerable to infection through skin wounds. Symptoms of painful swelling and inflammation are usually confined to the area around the wound. Treatment is with the antibiotic penicillin. Magnification: x11, 000 at 6x7cm, x5500 at 35mm size.
