Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of a Gardnerella vaginalis bacterium, in the process of dividing. G. vaginalis is one of several species of bacterium associated with bacterial vaginosis (also known as anaerobic vaginosis or non-specific vaginitis). The infection is sexually transmitted and causes a watery, non-irritating discharge which has a characteristic fishy odour. Treatment is with metronizadole. Male partners are treated concurrently to avoid reinfection. Magnification: x175,000 at 8x10 inch size.
