Caption: Chajnantor plateau. View north across the Chajnantor plateau in the Atacama Desert. This is the site of the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory, an astronomical observatory made up of a number of different telescope projects. One of these, The Atacama Pathfinder experiment (APEX), can be seen in the distance (centre left). This view is looking across the site where the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) telescope array will be constructed. Photographed in Chile, in December 2005.
