Caption: Milky Way centre. Colour composite image of the central region (Galactic Centre) of the Milky Way galaxy, about 26,000 light years from Earth. The image is composed of data from two different telescope projects. Giant clouds of gas and dust (blue) can be seen imaged by the LABOCA instrument on the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope at submillimetre wavelengths. The image also contains near-infrared data from the 2MASS project at K-band (red), H-band (green), and J-band (blue). The image shows a region approximately 100 light-years wide.
