Caption: Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, 1855. The Christmas Lectures for children have been held annually since 1825 at the Royal Institution, London, UK. The 1855 lectures (titled 'The Distinctive Properties of the Common Metals') were presented by British chemist and physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867). Included in the audience are Prince Albert (1819-1861, centre left) and his sons Prince Edward (aged 14) and Prince Alfred (aged 11). Faraday's lectures at the Royal Institution popularized science amongst the public. This artwork, an oil painting by British artist Alexander Blaikley (1816-1903), hangs at the Royal Institution.
