Caption: Disappearing lens. In this photograph the upper half of the lens is in air and it works as a familiar magnifying glass due to refraction at the air-glass interface. The lower part of the lens is submerged in a liquid with the same index of refraction as that of the lens. Since no refraction occurs at the liquid-glass interface the lens does not alter the checker-board image. In fact, the lower half of the lens is practically invisible. This demonstration is on display at the Deutsches Museum, Munich, Germany.
