Caption: An illustration of Francis Lana's proposition for a flying machine. Lana (1631-1687), a Jesuit, proposed navigating the atmosphere by raising a sailboat attached to very large copper balls. He believed that the thin copper balls would, once emptied of air, be lighter than air and therefore lift the boat.
