This spiral-shaped bacteria (red worm-like objects seen here) are passed on to humans via tick bites, and occur in the midgut of the tick. Several tick species harbour these bacteria, the principal vectors being: Ixodes ricinus in Europe; I. dammini and I. pacificus in North America. These ticks can infest dogs. The symptoms of Lyme disease include skin lesions, muscle pain, neuro- logical and cardiac abnormalities, and recurrent or chronic arthritis. Antibiotic & corticosteroid drugs offer a cure.
