Caption: James Sheridan Muspratt (1821-1871), Irish chemist. Muspratt was born in Dublin, but moved to England when he was one year old. His father was James Muspratt, an important industrial chemist. He was sent to the USA in 1841 to manage the family's business interests. When these proved unsuccessful he was sent work under the German chemist Justus von Liebig. He carried out research on sulphites and in organic chemistry before returning to England in 1848 and founding the Liverpool College of Practical Chemistry.
