Caption: Listeria monocytogenes. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, the causative agent of the human disease "listeriosis". These Gram-positive coccobacillus bacteria have a thick cell wall, with capsular material seen adhering. Listeria monocytogenes is contracted through contaminated food. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable; bacteria may cross the placenta to infect the baby which has no immunity. Others vulnerable include the elderly, cancer patients and those on immunosuppressive drugs. These bacteria may also be a cause of encephalitis & purulent meningitis. Magnification: x250,000 at 7x9.5 inch size.
