At top (red) is part of the rounded bacterial cell. Protruding from it are thread-like filaments known as pili, with which the bacterium attaches to human mucosal cells during infection. Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus) causes the sexually- transmitted disease gonorrhoea. Infection occurs across the genital mucous membranes of either sex. Symptoms include pain on passing urine, and a pus discharge from the penis or vagina. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. Magnification: unknown.
