Caption: Gardnerella vaginalis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Gardnerella vaginalis bacteria. These rod-shaped bacillus bacteria are Gram-variable and carbon dioxide dependent. G. vaginalis is one of several species of bacterium associated with bacterial vaginosis in women (also known as anaerobic vaginosis or non-specific vaginitis). The infection is sexually transmitted and causes a watery, non-irritating discharge which has a characteristic fishy odour. Treatment is with the drug metronidazole. Male partners are treated concurrently to avoid reinfection. Magnification: x30'000 at 6x7cm size. x15,000 at 35mm.
