Individual bacteria are rod-shaped bacilli, appearing as tiny dots. M. tuberculosis is the cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans. It is spread by coughing or sneezing, and is inhaled into the lungs. During initial infection, a primary tubercle (lesion) forms in the lung developing into pulmonary TB. TB is still a fatal disease in developing countries and among AIDS patients.
