Caption: Actinobacter. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a cluster of the bacteria, Actinobacter sp. Sometimes called Actinobacillus, it is a rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria. The species A. actinomycetemcomitans is pathogenic on humans. It may be found in actinomycotic abscesses in the mouth, often associated with other bacteria. The disease is called actinobacillosis. Actinobacter more commonly occurs in the alimentary, respiratory and/or genital tracts of domestic animals including cattle, sheep, horses, pigs and rabbits. It can become pathogenic in these animals, and may be transmitted to humans. Magnification: x8650 at 6x4.
