Caption: Lyme disease bacterium. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease in humans. Here, a single spiral-shaped spirochaete bacterium is seen. It is passed on to humans by tick bites, and occurs in the midgut of the tick. Several tick species harbour these bacteria, the principal vectors being: Ixodes ricinus in Europe; I. dammini and I. pacificus in North America. These ticks can infest dogs. The symptoms of Lyme disease include skin lesions, muscle pain, neuro- logical and cardiac abnormalities, and recurrent or chronic arthritis. Antibiotic & corticosteroid drugs offer a cure.
