Caption: Pseudomonas bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Pseudomonas sp. bacteria. These rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria are coloured green/blue, three of which are seen together at centre. They have long hair-like flagellae used for movement. Most Pseudomonads live in soil. However, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is found in the human gut and can cause serious wound, skin and urinary tract infections. It can also thrive at 43 degrees centigrade, so is often found infecting burns. Pseudomonas aeruginosa can grow inside baby incubators or ventilation units and can be inhaled, sometimes causing pneumonia. Magnification: x4500 at 35mm size.
