Caption: Leptospira sp. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of the spirochaete bacterium, Lepto- spira sp. Leptospira are typically 5-20 micro- metres long with a pronounced spiral structure. Here the bacterium has been coloured gold. Spiro- chaetes are a highly motile family of bacteria; they are widespread and are found in aquatic environments and in the bodies of animals. They are strict aerobes. Strains of Leptospira interrogans cause Weil's disease and Lepto- spirosis in humans. Magnification: unknown.
