Caption: Vibrio cholerae. Colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the Gram-negative bacteria, Vibrio cholerae, the cause of cholera in humans. Each sausage-like bacterium has a single, polar flagellum (not seen here), by which it moves. Cholera is an acute infection of the small intestines causing vomiting and diarrhoea leading to potentially fatal dehydration. The bacterium is a water-borne pathogen, transmitted to humans through drinking water contaminated by human or animal faeces. Outbreaks of cholera are associated with poor sanitary conditions and often occur in epidemic proportions. Magnification: x4,400 at 35mm size.
