Caption: Listeria sp. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Listeria sp., a genus of aerobic, non-sporing, Gram-positive bacteria. They are small bacilli or coccobacilli, often occurring in pairs or short chains. L. monocytogenes causes disease in humans, usually meningitis or septicae- mia, which affects newborn babies, the elderly and immuno-compromised people. Neonatal cases arise through the asymptomatic presence of the bacteria in the vagina of the mother. Listeriosis is also common in farm animals which eat silage that has not fermented properly. Listeria infections usually respond to treatment with ampicillin and gentamicin. Magnification: x6000 at 35mm size.
