Caption: Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a group of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis bacteria. These rod-shaped Gram-negative bacilli are enterobacteria. They have been isolated from wild and domestic animals, causing a tuberculosis-like disease of the lymph nodes. More rarely it attacks humans, leading to acute lymphadenitis (swollen lymph nodes) in children aged 5-14 years. Abdominal pain and mild fever result. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis may also cause a fulminating typhoid-like septicaemia. The bacteria can be isolated from blood, faeces, and lymph nodes. It is treated with antibiotics drugs. Magnification: x7,800 at 35mm size.
