Caption: Treponema sp. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of spirochaete bacteria Treponema sp (finger-like bodies) attached to the epithelium of human duodenum. Parts of 3 epithelial cells containing mitochondria can be seen (left). Spirochaetes are spiral-shaped bacteria and include pathogenic species such as Treponema pallidum which causes syphillis and Leptospira interrogans, which causes Weil's disease. Infection is by contact with urine from infected animals. Other organisms in the group cause relapsing fever and Lyme disease. Magnification: x4,500 at 6x4.5cm size.
