Caption: Lactobacillus acidophilus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the Gram-positive rod shaped bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus. The ragged outside layer of these bacteria is a surface protein layer which mediates their adhesion to mucous membrane cells. Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria occur naturally in the gut, and form the predominant fauna in the vagina of the human female. They ferment lactic acid from glycogen, producing an acidic environment. The acidity inhibits the growth of many other bacterial forms and therefore protects the vagina from pathogenic infection. Magnification: x30,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
