Caption: Hertha Marks Ayrton (1854-1923), British engineer and mathematician. Ayrton, born Phoebe Sarah Marks, studied mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge, and then physics and electrical engineering at Finsbury Technical College, London. She was the first female to be elected to the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the first woman to read her own paper before the Royal Society.
