Cells of this strain typically grow in aggregates, which protect them against phagocytosis by white blood cells. M. tuberculosis causes tuberculosis (TB) in humans. The bacteria are spread by coughing or sneezing and are inhaled into the lungs, where they proliferate to form lesions called tubercles.
