Caption: Actinomyces sp. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) showing a cluster of Actinomyces sp. bacteria. Species of this bacteria cause actino- mycosis in humans, a granulomatous infection with formation of abscesses. They resemble fungi and here appear as branched forms. Actinomyces sp. may exist around teeth, gums and in the throat of healthy humans. In this case actinomycosis may be triggered by trauma such as tooth extraction or a jaw fracture. Abdominal actinomycosis may follow appendicitis. In women, pelvic actinomycosis has been associated with the use of certain types of IUD contraceptive devices. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x2,500 at 35mm size.
