Caption: Salmonella enteritidis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of yellow Salmonella enteritidis bacteria on a blue stainless steel surface. These bacteria cause food poisoning (salmonellosis) in humans. These Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria use hair-like flagellae for motility. S.enteriti- dis produces toxins which act on the small intestine. Infection occurs when numbers of these bacteria are ingested through contaminated food, such as meat, milk and chicken eggs. Typical Salmonella food poisoning occurs with symptoms including vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.Magnification: x3500 at 6x6cm size. Magnification: x3100 at 10 centimetres wide.
