Caption: Proteus morganii. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of bacteria, Proteus morganii. Individual bacteria are rod-shaped (bacillus), gram-negative and highly motile, possessing hair-like flagella for movement. They are found in the intestines and in decaying organic matter. If P. morganii are ingested in large enough quantities, the enterotoxins that they produce can cause acute gastroenteritis. Infants are especially vulnerable to this inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Magnification unknown.
