Caption: Leptospira sp. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a spirochaete bacterium, Leptospira sp. This bacterium (blue) is gram- negative and has a pronounced spiral helix structure. Spirochaetes are a highly motile family of bacteria. Some live in aquatic environments, while others live as parasites in animals. They are strict aerobes. Certain strains of L. interrogans cause leptospirosis (Weil's disease) in humans. The symptoms of Weil's disease are fever, hepatitis with jaundice, haemorrhage, meningitis and renal failure. Magnification unknown.
