Caption: Treponema pallidum. Coloured light micrograph (LM) showing Treponema pallidum bacteria. These are gram-negative spirochaete (spiral-shaped) bacteria which are human parasites. T. pallidum causes syphilis that can lead to severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted by sexual intercourse or by intra- uterine infection. Treatment with penicillin drugs is effective if administered in the early stages. Phase contrast. Magnification unknown.
