Caption: Shigella flexneri. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Shigella flexneri bacteria. These are gram-negative, non-motile, bacilli (rod- shaped) bacteria. S. flexneri, like all bacteria belonging to the Shigella genus, is an obligate parasite which causes bacillary dysentery. This is brought about through the destructive invasion of the intestinal mucosa to which young children are particularly susceptible. Symptoms include diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Magnification unknown.
