Caption: Sutterella bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of Sutterella wadworthensis bacteria. This species was described in 1996 after isolation from human abdominal fluid. It is a gram-negative, asaccharolytic (does not metabolise sugars) and microaerophilic (prefers low oxygen concentrations) bacterium. It has also been found in brain abscesses, intra-abdominal infections and bacteraemia. It is more resistant to antimicrobial drugs than the bacteria it was distinguished from, Campylobacter gracilis. Magnification: x36,000 at 5x7cm size. x125,000 at 7x9.5 inch size.
