These are Gram-positive rod shaped bacilli bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB, or consumption) in humans. M. tuberculosis is spread by coughing or sneezing, and is inhaled into the lungs. There, the bacteria multiply to form a primary tubercle, a localized colony of bacteria. These bacteria may spread through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body, which can be fatal. If the bacteria do not spread, they may lie dormant, becoming active again many years later. Infections can be treated with antibiotics. Magnification: x15,200 at 5x7cm size.
