Individual bacteria are rod-like, Gram-negative, aerobic and non-motile. Chancroid, or soft sore, is more common in the tropics. It results in ulcers on the mucous membranes of the genitals and the enlargement of the lymph nodes in the groin. Treatment is with antibiotics.
