A spirochaete bacteria (yellow) can also be seen. L. acidophilus have a surface protein layer which allows them to adhere to mucous membrane cells. They occur naturally in the gut, and form the predominant fauna in the vagina of the human female. They ferment lactic acid from glycogen, producing an acidic environment. The acidity inhibits the growth of many other bacterial forms and therefore protects the vagina from pathogenic infection. These bacteria are also found in milk products. Magnification unknown.
