Caption: Cardiobacterium bacteria. Light micrograph of Cardiobacterium hominis bacteria (blue, centre & top right). These Gram-negative bacilli (rod-like bacteria) cause endocarditis (inflammation of the heart's internal lining) in humans. They are seen in a blood culture taken from a heart valve. C. hominis is the only member of the genus. The bacterium enters the bloodstream via the mouth as a result of dental disease or procedures. Its virulence is associated with pre-existing heart disease, as it adheres to damaged heart tissue and multiplies. Antibiotics provide effective treatment. Phase contrast. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
