Caption: Vaginitis bacteria. Artwork of the bacteria and other micro-organisms that cause vaginitis, inflammation of the vagina. The bacteria include Gardnerella vaginalis (mauve, some at top right), staphylococci (grape-like clusters, such as at upper centre) and streptococci (chains, such as at bottom centre). Also seen are Trichomonas vaginalis protozoa (large orange organisms) and Candida albicans fungi (orange branching structures). The disease can also be caused by an allergic reaction, chemical irritation, vitamin deficiency or a foreign body, like a tampon, in the vagina. Infections can be treated through the use of antibiotic or antifungal drugs.
