This elongated spiral-shaped bacterium (spirochaete) lacks a rigid cell wall. Pathogenic species of Treponema include T. pallidum which causes syphilis; T. carateum which causes the skin disease "pinta" in tropical America; and T. pertenue which causes yaws in Africa.
